I just purchased (like yesterday) a very gently used 2016 Retro 166, and I am so excited. I’ve been shopping for years and finally found the right trailer, the right price, the right tow vehicle, and the right time. Initially I was going to buy a hard-side pop-up, but someone more sane than I reminded me that my 50’s are behind me, and I might want to try easy rather than try hard. I live in the San Francisco Bay Area in a 100 year old home along the Napa River. I still work full-time, but intend to use my school vacations to take 7-10 day jaunts as rehearsal for a cross-country trip in about 4 years. I’m new to trailering/towing, so any hints are welcome! BTW, my tow vehicle is a 2014 Ford Escape 2.0L Eco-Boost. I’ve got all the equipment I need to make my leisurely journeys. After all, I am a Nana and thereby no longer attract disdain as I tootle majestically up the road.

Monica,

Welcome to the forums!

Congratulations on the new retro. Yes when your towing the retro there is something about it that that just makes you feel warm and fuzzy inside. As far as towing goes there is another member on here who is towing with a small SUV they said they have had great success using a towing Weight Distributing Hitch Kit which you can view one HERE . This will help with the weight of the trailer cruising down your rear suspension and it includes a sway stabilizer as well. I actually have the same kit I just haven’t installed it yet.

I’ve also added a easy option for uploading images to your post. Please see the “Forum Rules, News, and Instructions” forum for instructions we would love to see pictures of your retro.

Thanks, Kristopher.  My Retro was sold to me with the weight distribution hitch and the electric brake controller.  I bought an adapter to convert the 4 pin connector to a round 7 pin, and I think I’m good to go.  I haven’t gone yet, though.  In the meantime, I’ve been using the game below to practice backing up my trailer.  I have yet to succeed on the game, but I am practicing backing into a campsite in my mind all the time.  There are also a couple of useful youtube videos .

I’ll keep you posted on my progress.  I take possession on Saturday, and I can hardly wait!

Regarding photo uploads:  I don’t know where to find the Editor you refer to in your instructions.  What tab should I be clicking on?

Hi Monica – some advice…hope this isn’t patronizing…  When backing the trailer into a spot, just take it slowly.  Don’t hesitate to stop, put the vehicle in park, set the brake, and get out and look.   You also need to think about leveling the camper.  Front to back is usually pretty easy with the jack.  Side to side, you sometimes need some blocks or something to get it level.  We use the Anderson “Wheel Chock and leveler”, but there are other stackable blocks that work too.

Kristopher – I don’t see anything that says “Attachments” in the editor.  There is a button to insert an image, but it asks for a “source” and I can’t seem to get it to work.

Its below the editor. I’ve uploaded an image showing the location of the attachments button. “Click the attachments button.”

Sorry, but all I see are the “Smileys”, “Cancel”, and “Submit Reply”.  I do not see the “Options”, or “Attachments” buttons.
