Wife & I just got home from 10 days & 1000+ miles roundtrip – camping with RubySue. Started out with 3 nights outside Knoxville, at Volunteer Park – attended Freshman orientation at Univ of Tennessee – our daughter will be attending in the Fall.

Left Knoxville and headed to Tybee Island, GA for a week of RNR.
Was the first time wife & I have been without kids on vacation in 25 years – Lived it up!
Enjoyed the beach (til our umbrella blew up), & explored Tybee Island & Savannah. Savannah is the most beautiful city I’ve ever seen – they’ve done a great job preserving its history – architecture is amazing.
Welcome to Tybee!
River’s End Welcome!
Set up at River’s End – great campground! Beach is about 200 yds away!
Korean War Memorial at the end of US-80 in Tybee – “given by Republic of Korea & a grateful nation” – even more meaningful given what’s going on in the News.
It’s worth getting up early on Tybee!
In addition to be a Light Station dating to early 1700’s – it was also home to a military base, Fort Screven, built in late 1890’s
Theater, built around 1910, has been restored and hosts movies nightly – we went to a documentary on sea turtles
Enjoyed a tour of Savannah with Old Savannah Tours.
Church Steeple – apologize for the bad angle – shot on the move
Even gutters are accessorized
Cathedral of St John the Baptist – must see! Is open for self guided tours – took no pics inside – is amazing architecture / stained glass by Tiffany.
Bonaventure Cemetery – went to see the tombstone from “Midnight in the Garden of Good & Evil” – turns out it was moved downtown to a museum due to damage by vandals/sightseers after the release of the book. Definitely worth the trip anyway! Cemetery even has an app that provides bios/history of many of the people buried there.
Statues at Entry gate to Christian side
The Crab Shack – great / fun place to eat – quirky – great views of river; dolphins; alligator feeding; & plenty of places for photo ops – just happened to catch a couple tables open for this pic
RubySue at Night
Another beautiful sunrise
And another 🙂
Tybee Island Light – 145 feet tall-178 steps to top
Stairwell in Tybee Island Light. – love the brickwork – is round on the inside & an octagon on the outside
First window well
View from window at top – was able to go out on landing for a 360 view of the island
Lens Magnifies a 2-inch 1000w bulb to enable its being seen over 20 miles away
Shark Tooth found on Tybee – first one i’ve ever found
Must be a baby tooth!
